Almora in the state of Uttarakhand is known for its scenic look and beautiful landscapes. The city gets derives its name from "Kilmora", a short plant found in the region that was used for washing utensils of the Sun Temple at Katarmal.

Geography of Almora

Almora is located at geographical coordinates of 29.5971°N and 79.6591°E with an average elevation of 1,642 meters or 5,387 feet above sea level. It is located 415 kms from the state capital of Dehradun, and about 63 kms from Nainital. It is surrounded by thick forests of pine and fur trees. The rivers of Koshi and Suyal flow alongside the city.

History of Almora

Founded by King Kalyan Chand in 1568, Almora once was the seat of Chand Kings that ruled the Kumaon Kingdom. During the early phases of Chand rule, city was known as Rajapur and later named Alamnagar by King Bhishm Chand. Tewaris were the earliest inhabitants of Almora and the city was developed by Chand Kings unlike the neighboring hill stations like Nainital & Shimla that were developed by the British. There are many historical monuments, royal courts and old forts that are still in decent shape here.

Culture of Almora

Hindi and Kumaoni are the local languages spoken here. The city maintains its old traditions and customs which is duly reflected in their way of life. As per the census of 2011, city has a population of 34,122 and a literacy rate of 94.51%. The city experiences pleasant weather all throughout the year however best time to visit here is during the months of March to November.

Shopping in Almora

There are many shopping markets in Almora city that attract tourists visiting the city. At the local bazaars of Almora you can find range of exquisite items. The Lala Bazaar here in 200 years old. The city is famous for Angora clothes that are made from Angora rabbit's fur and Almora's special copper vessels. The city is famous for its climate & beautiful view of Himalayas. It is center of the Kumaon Regiment of Indian Army. One can have memorable experiences here at Kumaon Regimental museum and Green Golf Course.

Kausani is located around 52 kms from Almora. Along with the breathtaking views of Himalayas, one can experience the famous Katyur Valley in front to get a great sunrise experience. The famous Hindi poet Sumitra Nandan Pant was born here. Pinnath, Bura Pinnath and Bhakot are the highest points near Kausani.

Located around 35 kms from Almora, Jageshwar is one of the most important religious place for Hindus and is among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The great temple complex is situated in a narrow and beautiful valley covered with Cedar trees. The streams of Nandini and Surabhi flow down the hills and meet near the sacred spot. There is a huge fair that is held here during monsoon season. There is even mention of this temple in the 'Mahabharata'.

Binsar which is located around 30 kms from Almora, is another famous sightseeing destination. The region is surrounded by thick forest and houses animals like panther and the barking deer. The temple of Binsar is also located nearby.
